296 Smith Street (2007)

Director: John Evagora

Tagline: On the street that doesn't want you to be there

Set on one of the few pawn shops one of Melbourne's most notorious streets in the last pocket of the inner suburbs that has resisted gentrification, we see a full day in the life of the store-owner.

There are a cast of colourful characters throughout the story and they do seem like they could be actual customers of the place.

I thought the film was very well shot and black and white suited the overall style of the film.

While it was a good short, I did tend to know what was going to happen next for some reason as everyone has an idea of what a pawn shop would be like and it did seem to be ticking boxes for what was happening.
