The Sky Crawlers (2008)

Director: Mamoru Oshii
With the voices of: Rinko Kikuchi, Chiaki Kuriyama, Shosuke Tanihara, Bryce Hitchcock

Tagline: Zzzzz...

In this film ace pilot Mitsuya is transferred to a remote airfield and begins to suspect he has been there before. It is never really explained, but wars have been privatised and are now fought by proxy between corporations with specialised pilots known as Kildren who are like children, but never age.

For crying out loud! Can't somebody write a story in a totalitarian future society that is NOT based on 1984? At least Brave New World was a pleasure-based society even if it did end badly. H.G. Well's story "when the sleeper wakes" would also be a great retro-style future society to use and also features lots of aircraft.

While the battle sequences were great, the movie slowed to a crawl whenever it was on the ground and the characters were so bland and uninteresting that I could really be bothered to care about them.

Rating: 5/10
