The pig is the terminal corpse time - MIFF 2009 Blog

Ong bak 2 (2008)

Directors: Tony Jaa, Panna Rittikrai
Starring: Tony Jaa, Sorapong Chatree, Sarunyu Wongkrachang, Natdanai Kongthong, Dan Chupong, Supakorn Kitsuwon

Five years since the first movie closed out the 2004 Melbourne International Film Festival, it doesn't seem that long at all. I was really looking forward to this movie due to the fun I had in the first.

It is disappointing to say that it is not really as good as the first, sure the action is there and it cause lots of gasps and cheering for people getting a knee to the head, but something important was missing in this film that I can't really put my finger on.

The story has been moved back to 15th Century Thailand and does have an interesting mix of cultures for some reason with Middle Eastern, Chinese, Japanese and African fighting in the mix.

Much amusement was had with some random woman in the screening yelling out "YOU DESERVED THAT PSYCHO!" and everyone laughing at her.

The story is a bit of a mess and seems to loop around on itself at one point. It is fairly obvious what is eventually going to happen, but the ending does seem to be a bit of a cop out and I did feel cheated with the stupid "Karma" explanation.

They can't be all winners and I would still recommend this movie if you want lots of action and are prepared to fast forward during the boring plot bits. I don't know why Tony Jaa kept his shirt on for most of the movie, I paid to see bare-chested sweaty men pounding on each other!

I did like the tribute to drunken boxing, although it did really come from nowhere and that part of the movie had nothing to do with anything else.

The best thing about this film is that it will make you want to watch the first film again so you can enjoy it more.

Rating: 6/10
