Blood Ballad (2006)
Director: Matthew Rich
Tagline: Dark colonial gothic love story
A man sings in the burnt ruins of a house, his dead lover at his feet. We never actually learn how this happens, but that is the least of the man's problems as a dark shadowy gang have their own business to take care of with him.
This short was very strange and disturbing and nothing was spelt out for the audience which made it interesting. I haven't heard of the musicians involved before but their songs were used very well in this context.
I would like to see more historical dramas take this route rather than being so stiff and formal as they all seem to be. Hopefully this short will get a good run at festivals and the people involved go on to do a lot more work.
