Zinda (2005)Director: Sanjay Gupta Starring: John Abraham, Lara Dutta, Sanjay Dutt, Celina Jaitley, Mahesh Manjrekar
Tagline: If I had a hammer...
I had heard about this movie and it is only out of a sense of morbid curiosity that I watched it as I loved Oldboy and wanted to see how big a mess the director made of this version and if there was a hammer dance scene.
The movie is almost exactly the same as Oldboy if it had been directed by someone with an acquired brain injury (probably from being hit on the head by a hammer.) Adding a power drill into the mix and even more violence isn't going to cover it up.
I know there are a lot of Bollywood movies that rip off other films, but this one is particularly bad due to the original receiving such high praise and being so unique.
Even buying a pirated version of this movie for $5 with another movie on the DVD felt like a rip off (there was no other way to get it.) Do not pay money for this movie. Download some clips if you want to satisfy your curiosity, but even then I would not recommend it unless you want to piss off Chan Park Wook.
The one positive thing I can say about this film is that I learned the Hindi pronounciation of "Z" can sound like a "J" sometimes when I bought it from a nice lady at an Indian spice store.
This site is definitely not affilated with the Melbourne International Film Festival (DUH!) or the Melbourne Underground Film Festival.
