Nik Coppin - Mixed Racist

Sahara Bar & Restaurant, Thursday 28th March 2013

It had been a bit of a bumpy ride for Nik in the past couple of weeks as he went on a break in Bali and then couldn't get his visa renewed as the comedy festival would not sponsor it. Luckily it was worked out at the last minute or I wouldn't have been able to see the show.

Taking about race issues has always been part of Nik's material as he has parents of different nationalities, but this show brings together all the stories he usually only tells as anecdotes in his other shows. It also challenges stereotypes and talks about how you can be accused of being a racist even if you are mixed race and talking to someone in the same ethnic group.

One of the funniest parts of the show is the saga of Nik's interview with Peter Goers on ABC Radio in Adelaide and how he managed to get an apology out of him after being accused of being a racist in print.

Was a bit of a cosy audience on the night, but it was understandable given it was the day before Good Friday and the footy was on.

Rooftop bar on the next floor is a bit noisy, but you can block it out even if the performer is not using the microphone as is the case on the night.

It was a good show and I will try to make it to Shaggers upstairs at the Exford before the end of the festival.
