Police Story (1985)
Director: Jackie Chan
Cast: Jackie Chan, Brigitte Lin Ching-Hsia, Maggie Cheung Man-Yuk, Bill Tung Piu, Mars
Tagline: The original and still the best
As I've seen this movie at least half a dozen times on the big screen, TV and DVD, I'll just go through why I still like this
movie the most out of all the Police Story movies.
What I like most about this movie is that it shows how you can get something good out of
a bad experience. In this case it was Jackie's experience on the movie The Protector that
inspired him to make a police movie the way he wanted to make it. He also borrowed the
idea of showing the outtakes over the credits which is one of the things that made his
movies so famous.
Another thing you can do with this movie is see where some more recent action movies
got inspiration for some of their stunts. Everyone would know about the truck sequence
in Tango and Cash being taken from this movie, but the more recent Bad Boys 2 also has
a sequence resembling the first scene I have heard.
My favourite thing about this movie are the characters involved. It is really fun seeing
how young and cute Maggie Cheung looks. Even though she is mostly around for comic
relief it makes a big difference to the movie.
Also good to see was Jackie Chan's top stuntman Mars in a bigger role. He is actually
Jackie's double in a lot of movies but is modest about it.
Rounding out the supporting characters is Bill Tung who plays Jackie's superior in the movie.
He is in all of the Police Story series and has some funny lines himself even though he
mainly plays a desk role.
There have already been thousands of words written about the action scenes in this movie,
so I don't really have anything to ad. My favourite is when Jackie Runs down the concrete
slope from the Peak (which he actually used to do when he was a kid). I may have to try
that if I ever go to Hong Kong.
